Below is a list of activities and units that REVIVE PE covers during the school year.
Dear Family & Friends!
It’s Alivia here and I am writing to let you in on my exciting news! God has been working in amazing ways in my life; from calling me into the field of physical education to adventures in Redlands, California for student teaching and then calling me to return to Redlands after graduation.
Through my time in Redlands, CA I have had the privilege of getting involved in the community through church, teaching Sunday school classes, coaching, substitute teaching, working at a gymnastics gym and joining a running group. Each of these has opened doors and provided opportunities I never imagined were possible which leads me to the news I am so excited to share with you!
God has opened a door for me to share my love of physical education at Lugonia Elementary School! I have the amazing opportunity to create and implement a PE program to a school that desperately needs PE. However, this teaching position is not your typical teaching job. Unlike most teaching positions, my position at Lugonia is not paid. It is a position that is brand new and for the coming year will be a volunteer position.
So what is Lugonia? Why isn’t it paid? Why is it so special? And why am I writing to tell you about it? ...I’m glad you asked! :)
Lugonia Elementary is a pre-K through 5th grade public school in the Redlands Unified School District. It is situated on the northeast side of Redlands and draws its students from the surrounding neighborhoods where most homes are federal housing complexes for low-income families. The school serves nearly 700 students from various family backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions. Until just a few years ago, Lugonia Elementary struggled to get students to come to school on a consistent basis. The students simply weren’t motivated to attend school, which is when The River Church along with help from students from the University of Redlands YoungLife Group began a lunch-time intramural sports program for 4th and 5th grade students. The intramural program gained popularity and over the last few years has immensely helped 4th and 5th grade student attendance on intramural days. The school realized the in-credible jump in student attendance and the drop in disciplinary problems on intramural days and approached The River to see if the intramural program could be expanded for the 2016-2017 school year. This is when The River came back with the idea of starting a PE program to help get students moving, having fun, and simply attending school on a regular basis. Lugonia loves the idea, but realizes that a PE program is not something in their ever-shrinking school budget.
The idea of creating and implementing a PE program at a school whose current PE program is nearly non-existent is intimidating, but after volunteering and visiting the school I fell in love! The students stole a piece of my heart and I began to realize that unlike any of the teaching jobs I applied for...this position did not have a line of applicants and I realized if I don’t, no one will. This reality broke my heart and throughout my job searching kept creeping back to the front on my mind. God has placed this opportunity at my feet and in my heart and I could not be happier for what the future holds and to see what He has up His sleeve for the coming year. I am going out on a limb with crazy faith trusting in the One who holds each of us in His hand.
So here is where you can come in! I am looking for amazing supporters who see my vision and believe in what God is doing in my life. There are a few ways you can become a part of my group of amazing supporters:
